Hon. Enid Origumisiriza, Woman Member of Parliament Kabale District, has sounded the alarm over what she termed as escalating moral degeneration in Uganda, calling on the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister to urgently address the matter on the floor of Parliament.
Speaking during plenary of the 12th Parliament today, Hon. Origumisiriza said the breakdown in values, discipline, and integrity is now visible in workplaces, public institutions, and among the youth.
"Mr. Speaker, we cannot build a strong nation on a weak moral foundation. The rate at which corruption, indiscipline, and erosion of cultural values are spreading is alarming. This is a matter of national importance," she told the House.
The MP expressed concern that the moral decay is undermining national development and threatening the future of the next generation if not checked immediately.
"As leaders, we have a duty to protect the social and cultural fabric of this country. I am therefore requesting the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister to come to this House and make a comprehensive statement on Government’s strategy to restore discipline, integrity, and national values," Hon. Origumisiriza stated.
The Speaker directed that her concern be forwarded to the Office of the Prime Minister for an official response.
Hon. Origumisiriza further called on fellow leaders, parents, religious institutions, and civil society to play a leading role in mentoring the youth and upholding ethics in both public and private life.
